South Austrian history: The war between Styria and Carinthia

The war
between
Styria and Carinthia

A true story,
for it's true that someone once told it

It happened once in a past century. The prices for pumpkin seed oil reached a peak, and the sexy waitresses in white blouses and black minis served the hot chocolate cold.  It was only a question of time when the cultural differences would turn into a concoction of desperation and the thrill to kill. The border between the most southern Bundesländer of Austria was about to transfigure into a scenario of ice-cold vengeance,.. a battle field only for heros of unimaginable subtlety and skill.

There where thousands of chaotic battles that ended in slaughter, death, and even minor injuries. There  where wins and losses on both sides, especially on the left, but it appeared there wouldn't be an end for any of those pals fighting for their ... well,.. whatever they were fighting for. But astonishingly sudden, the major commander of Styria came up with an idea. He turned to his wise fellows and uttered words like "Guys, I have a plan." He had a plan and therefore continued: "As we all know, the Carinthian families always name their sons Koarl, right?" He was right and people acknowledged: "He's right." He went into further detail and explained: "Now, that we know that every Carinthian son is named Koarl, all we have to do is call their names on the battle field, for we know they'll be Carinthian enough to get up, willing to answer, as their innermost habits begs them to do." He concluded, "Before we try to shoot the enemy, speak out loud their names! So our targets will rapidly raise from the earth where they hide, and they'll appear like puppets in front of our barrels." Differently prepared, the fought at the next battle

S e p p  1  (shouting): Koarl!
K o a r l  1 (stands up and answers): Yes?
Sepp looks up and shoots at Koarl 1. Koarl 1, hit by the bullet, falls down.
S e p p  1  (shouting): Koarl!
K o a r l  2 (stands up and answers): Yes?
Sepp looks up and shoots at Koarl 2. Koarl 2, hit by the bullet, falls down.
S e p p  1  (shouting): Koarl!
K o a r l  3 (stands up and answers): Yes?
Sepp looks up and shoots at Koarl 3. Koarl 3, hit by the bullet, falls down.

This neck-breaking idea lead to a devastating loss on the Carinthian side. But the major authorities of Carinthia came up with a contra plan for battles to follow. One of them discerned: "Guys, I have a plan." He had a plan and therefore continued: "As we all know, the Styrian tribes always name their sons Sepp, right?" He was right and the crowd approved of his words: "He's right." He developed his argument and expressed: "Now, that we know that every Styrian son is named Sepp, all we need to do is call their names on the battle field, for we know they'll be Styrian enough to get up, willing to answer, as their uttermost habits urges them to do." He ended, "Before we try to shoot the foe, speak out loud their names! So our targets will fast rise from the trenches (and bunkers they conceal), and they'll appear like puppets in front of our barrels." And so it came to the next battle:

S e p p  1  (shouting): Koarl!
K o a r l  1 (stands up and answers): Yes?
Sepp looks up and shoots at Koarl 1. Koarl 1, hit by the bullet, falls down.
K o a r l  2  (shouting): Sepp!
S e p p  1 (answering): Koarl, is it you?
K o a r l  2 (stands up and answers): Yes!

That's how Styria won the war against Carinthia.

Yours,

This war is still in the heads of many old souls who couldn't forget the rape, the torture, and the streets coward in blood. In lie, even the war continued in the heads of too many. I never thought it would turn into a problem for me—since I deemed my verbal heat useful in battle: My divergent tongue is German-English, my honest middle-tongue is Spanish, and my short tongue is French ('though all I can express with this one is Bonjour, Zǔt, and D'accord). My sister even tops it with German-Latin being her divergent. However, it doesn't count due to the fact that our occupations are merely iconic. We represent shields rather than weapons, which by the way can be quite hurtful.

Who Am I?

Hello everyone! My name is Stefanie Schauer, I am 21 years old and a person with way too many different hobbies and interests. A day must have at least 48 hours in order for me to be able to embrace all of my favourite activities.

My affection for my two biggest passions already began to show when I was very young. At that time, my family and I lived in a very small house only surrounded by forests and endless maize fields. It was beautiful to look at but sometimes really boring – until we got our first personal computer. Ever since then I spend way too many hours of my weekends either playing games or browsing the Internet. It was around the same time, when I started binge-reading any comic books and novels that I was able to get my hands on.

Here you can see my first attempts at knitting and crocheting,
some cupcakes I made for my niece's birthday party
and my homemade Onigiri.
Nowadays, my hobbies are more varied than that. Besides reading, I also enjoy writing, drawing, painting and doing crafts. Some of the hobbies I recently started are knitting and crocheting easy applications. It may sound like something only your grandma would enjoy, but I found out that it is the perfect activity for me to do while watching my favourite series.

On the weekends, I also love to cook or bake all kinds of confectionery for my family and friends. Lately, I have been trying to extend my cooking abilities by experimenting with different Asian recipes, especially Japanese and Korean ones. Most of the easy ones actually turn out pretty good, like these Japanese Onigiri.

I think that should be enough information about me for now. If you are interested in getting to know more about me, feel free to talk to me any time.

Who am I?

Hello dear fellow students!

To be honest, I am not very good at introducing myself. I think it's always easier to talk about others than about oneself. But anyway, I'll do my best to let you know a bit about me.

My full name is Lena Ogris, which isn't a very long or extraordinary one. But if you're from Carinthia, especially from the South, you may immediately be able to tell which town I am from according to my last name. You may not find a single street here without anybody called 'Ogris' living in it. The town's name is Ferlach which I am sure you have heard about. Either because of the weapons being produced here or because of the famous school where you learn how to produce weapons (of course they also teach other things).

So, the place where I was raised and spent the greatest part of my life in, is the one mentioned above. But the place where I was born is a rough but charming hanseatic town called Bremen in the north of Germany. My northern German roots are probably the reason why I prefer the sea to the mountains and hate skiing more than any other type of sport.

not the most beautiful side of Bremen, but I like it

I have to admit that there actually isn't any type of sport I really enjoy participating. My passion is music, as well playing it myself as listening to it. There's no better way for me to relax than playing the piano for an hour after a long day. I play the guitar too sometimes, but in my opinion there is no other instrument as multifarious as the piano. It can produce the softest as well as the most powerful sounds.

I could go on and tell you about other activities I enjoy, music I like, places I've been to... But I don't want this to become long-winded. This must be enough information for you to get an idea of who I am. Enjoy your weekend!

Who am I?

Hi, guys!

My name is Magdalena, but most people just call me Magda. I grew up in a rather small place near Klagenfurt, where my mom owns an inn. Shorty after I was born and my dad turned his parents’ attic into our apartment, she decided that taking over my grandmother’s inn was the perfect thing to do. She could work, but could still be by my side in a matter of minutes. So naturally, I spend quite sometime in the inn as well. I would play with some of the guests or wait on them – as good as you can as a four-year-old.

Since I didn’t only grow up in a house constantly full of people but a huge part of my family only lives a ten-minute walk away, I love being surrounded by people.  It’s something I appreciate about living in a student residence: You almost always can find somebody to play or cook with or just sit down and talk to. Unfortunately, I won’t have that privilege much longer since I’m about to move into my very own flat.

Inspiration for my own flat

On my weekends home I’m usually busy with meeting all of my family members, trying to get all my laundry done and often also helping out in the inn. That’s also when I stop reading for a few days. Terry Pratchett, who unfortunately passed away yesterday, was one of my favourite authors alongside Neil Gaiman and Oscar Wilde and I’m still on Mission: Finish Discwold series.

I’m not going to bore you by writing about how much I love traveling or languages. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t study TKK.  I'm not even going to write about Venice, which is my favourite city. I hope you still got to know me a bit better. Have a nice weekend!
Magdalena

Hi, it's me!

Dear fellow students! (:

As required, I am going to give you a glimpse into my life.

My name is Mirjam Urach and I come from a small, rural village in Carinthia. As I have lived there for all my life, I am enjoying life in the city all the more.  It was quite a positive change of scenery to move to Graz, I have to say. Last fall I began to study English and Spanish in Graz and I believe it was the best decision I could have made.

Two hobbies of mine I want to mention are music and reading. Music is a great part of my family, so it has always been in my life. I enjoy singing in a choir and playing the piano. In my childhood, I was pretty crazy about nearly all the flutes available. In secondary school I took guitar lessons, but if you would ask me now to play something, I could not. Therefore, I plan on picking up that instrument again at some point in the future. So, it's just the piano right now. Of course, I also love listening to music. As I mentioned, reading is another passion of mine. I believe it's important not to just read one particular genre. Right now, I am working my way through a pile of books from my aunt. They are mainly about the Dalai Lama and Tibet, which I think is a very interesting topic.

In search of something in my room to show you, that card I got in a restaurant caught my eye. The fun thing is that only today I became aware of the fact that the text on it is kind of my motto. Keep calm and eat pasta! As I am too nervous and worried about things in general, I often tell myself to just keep calm. Keep calm and look on the bright side. Also be more relaxed and most importantly enjoy life, do things which make you happy and be with people who make you happy. The second part is “eat pasta” and to that I can say that I am a vegetarian who loves eating everything related to pasta. Over the years, I have gained more insight into how bad the massive meat consumption is for humans, animals and the environment. So I am glad to have abandoned my animal eating self years ago and I can only tell you to follow Barilla's advice. Eat pasta. It tastes better anyway! (;

So, that was it from my part.

Bye! :D

Who I am? Well, find it out:

Hello dear SUK2 students and lecturers J

I am 20-year-old Lisa Maria Zarfl and today I am going to tell you what defines me as a person. Firstly, as you can probably guess from my choice of study, I am passionate about foreign languages. I have a good knowledge of English, French and Italian and also Russian was amongst my school subjects. My love of languages and communication goes along with my wanderlust. I have already been to 14 different countries across Europe and I am looking forward to visiting as many other fascinating places as possible. If I am not exploring foreign countries, you will probably find me hanging in the middle of a climbing wall. I definitely have a head for heights and love challenging myself. My friend Kerstin and I have been climbing for five years now and our motto is The only way is up. The next hobby I want to mention is fine arts. I have always loved drawing and learning new stuff about artists and stylistic eras. For this reason, I would probably study Art History, if I didn’t decide to focus on languages. Last but not least I want to tell you about my passion for boating and the sea in general. When I was 16, I got an international driver’s licence for motorboats and a couple of years later I also passed a test that focused on sailing. In my opinion, navigating your own boat through the water towards a beautiful sunset is one of the best things you can do in life. Well, I hope you found out something new and interesting about me and I am looking forward to reading your blogs!

See you in class,
Lisa
